I’m so happy you are here! I hope you giggle, have fun, and get excited about learning American Sign Language! If you are a deaf child, celebrate who you are as Hazel does! I have loved signing for many years while working with deaf children as both a speech language therapist and a teacher. I wrote “Proud Deaf Girl” to show how sweet friendships can bloom and grow, even with people who seem different from us. Enjoy!
Along my path of working with deaf and hard of hearing students as both a Speech-Language Pathologist and a teacher of the deaf, I wanted to celebrate my passion for American Sign Language. Hazel and her friend came from the heart of my imagination and onto the pages of “Proud Deaf Girl”. It is my wish that they will creep into yours, too!
Hi! I had the joy and honor of illustrating Proud Deaf Girl. I fell in love with Karen's manuscript the second I read it! It was great fun bringing Hazel and her best friend to life. Through the process of drawing this book, Hazel taught me a lot about friendship and most of all – being proud of who you are! Learn more about me at www.BrendaHarrisIllustration.com
